Alcohol situation in Muslim countries.
Islam is the state religion in Malaysia.
Muslims, who make up about 70% of the population, are required by Sharia law to observe halal (permitted) and non-halal (not permitted) rules regarding what they eat, drink, and wear.
The most well-known of these prohibitions is the "prohibition of alcohol consumption.
On the other hand, as a multi-ethnic country, it is tolerated for non-Muslims and foreigners to drink alcohol, and it is possible to buy and drink alcohol (with some restrictions) in supermarkets and eat and drink in bars and taverns.
The production of alcoholic beverages is also prohibited, except for special exceptions, such as those with ancestral licenses dating back to the past.
One such exception is the case of an Indian Malaysian who brews a coconut liquor called "toddy" in the tradition of his native India.
