Icelandic glaciers covered with volcanic ash.The harsh environment creates 'blennivin'.
The key ingredient in the taste is caraway seed!
To answer the question first, Iceland's national drink, Brennivín, is an aquavit schnapps based on potatoes and grains.
It is characterised by the cool, soft water of Iceland, known as the Land of Fire and Ice, and flavoured with caraway seeds, which thrive in the harsh environment.
In Icelandic, 'blennivin' means 'burning wine', or distilled liquor.
The alcohol content is around 40-50%.
It has the frightening nickname 'Black Death', but this is intentional!
