Not an izakaya, but a Japanese-style cocktail bar!
Sao Paulo, Brazil, is the most commercial city in South America.
The Punch Bar, located in a building along Paulista Boulevard, the main street of the city, leaks its light through a small window in the door at 18:00 at dusk, when the workers are heading home.
The cocktail bar, which sells Japanese-style cocktails, is run by Miyazaki Hikardo, a second-generation Japanese American who speaks fluent Japanese.
He opened The Punch Bar in August 2020 after resigning in 2018 from a Japanese company where he had worked for 12 years as an industrial designer.
He said, "Ever since I was working at the company, I liked to serve food and drinks to my friends at churrasco (Brazilian-style barbecue) and other events, and the more times I went, the more people around me encouraged me to open a restaurant!"As I had been serving churrasco (Brazilian barbecue) and other drinks to my friends since I was working for the company, I was repeatedly encouraged by people around me to open a restaurant.
At first, he thought about running an izakaya, but he wanted to do something different.
Then the world of Japanese cocktail bars caught his eye.
