Whether it's carrying beer cases and P-boxes up and down a flight of stairs or practising for a competition late at night after hours...... hard-working bartenders need to keep up their fitness levels.

In fact, muscle training and running have become a bit of a boom among bartenders, with some even competing in trail running races in the over-100km category!

Some bartenders are even competing in 100km-plus trail running races! There are still very few bartenders who are in the habit of exercising regularly, and I feel that there is a chronic lack of exercise," says Hiromitsu Ito, owner-bartender at Cocktail Bar Raven (Koiwa).

Ito and Hiroki Sakurai of Cocktail Bar Raven (Koiwa) organised a physical fitness test for bartenders, by bartenders, to find out.

But why a physical fitness test?

'The idea was to create an opportunity for bartenders to start exercising in a fun way,' he says.

Many bartenders are not good team players, so I thought an exercise session would be difficult.

In that respect, the physical fitness test is familiar as everyone has experienced it when they were students. Many people don't like to lose, so I thought the idea of challenging their own past records would be a good fit."

After announcing the event on social networking sites, a whopping 20 bartenders gathered at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, the venue for the event.
