On the Ogasawara Islands, registered as a World Natural Heritage Site, rum has been made from locally produced sugar cane for around 200 years.We find out what the background is to the production of this drink and speak directly to the manufacturer!

In June 2011, the Ogasawara Islands, 1000 km south of Tokyo, were finally registered as a World Natural Heritage Site.

The islands are rich in nature, and one of their special features is the passion fruit, asafoetida and other agricultural products produced by their subtropical climate.

Sugarcane cultivation has been practised on the island since 1876, when it became a Japanese territory, and is an important industry.

A by-product of the sugar cane industry is Ogasawara Rum, a locally brewed sake!

Shochu, sake and awamori are the most common types of local sake in Japan, but why rum ......?

Here we look at the history of rum production in the Ogasawara Islands, which are currently the focus of much attention.
