In October 2024, Handshake Speakeasy ('Handshake') in Mexico City became Mexico's first No. 1 bar in The World's 50 Best Bars.To get a first-hand look at Eric Van Beek, the bar director who heads up the bar, our local staff member actually went for a drink as a guest!

Meaning behind 'Handshake'.

The prestigious top spot in The World's 50 Best Bars 2024 was awarded to Handshake Speakeasy ('Handshake') in Mexico City.

This is the first time this has been achieved in Mexico!

The restaurant opened in April 2021 and has steadily built up its reputation, ranking 11th in 2022 and 3rd in 2023.

The name 'Handshake' means handshake or agreement in English, but it also has connotations such as the gesture of entering a Speakeasy bar during the Prohibition era and respect for each other.

Eric van Beek, one of the directors and founders of the restaurant, has been the driving force behind the restaurant's success.

We were lucky enough to interview Eric, one of the world's most in-demand bartenders, just before the launch of The World's 50 Best Bars.
