BAR Neji-Kui opened in Nagoya's Nakano area in 2014. While the area name may be unfamiliar, it's a hotspot for foodies, dotted with several Michelin-listed restaurants. We asked owner-bartender Yasushi Saito about the Nakano neighborhood and why he chose to open his bar there.

Within walking distance of Nagoya Station, yet it has a downtown charm!

When people think of Nagoya's downtown areas, many probably picture Sakae, Kinsan (commonly known as Kinsan-chome), or the Meieki area near Nagoya Station, right?

Nagono, however, stands apart from these bustling districts. It's an area where Michelin-listed restaurants and other gems of dining establishments gather within historic streetscapes dating back to the Edo period.

It's about a 15-20 minute walk northeast from Nagoya Station.

East of the Horikawa River lies Marunouchi, the Tokai region's premier office district.

Historically, about 400 years ago, when Nagoya Castle was built by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu, merchants relocated from Kiyosu to form this castle town.

While theories vary, the name "Nagoya" is said to derive from "Nagono"!
